The Red Hood Helmet v1 by ajb3art The Red Hood Helmet v1 by ajb3art
ok so this is the finished repaint. as u can see its really not too shabby! i mean there are amazing prop builders on deviantart who just could blow this away in a 1 day build im sure, but most of us dont have those talents and we have to make do with what we can.

so as far as the animated film goes, under the RED hood, the detail (oddly enough) was more involved than the comic (under the hood) version. i sorta liked the feel of the animated one, and i thought that was definitely the helmet i wanted for my costume.

so if ur like me and u wanna go red hood this fall (or w/e) but u can't build helmets for shit, this is a VERY easy fix that has some pretty decent results for ur helmet issue.

this 2 piece helmet/mask from disguise is available on amazon for about 30 bucks all in all after shipping, and if u got some spray paint and a sharpie ur in business.

i'll put up a couple of versions of the costumes, im gonna mix gloves/boots and jackets to get a feel but i hope u dig the results.

I think it's pretty clever turning the iron man helmet into the red hood one. Nice work

Using a Iron Man helmet as a Red Hood helmet... I have honestly never thought of it before, lol. Nice idea.

A small question about the helmet, can you see through the white part of the eyes? Or is it just painted on?

its actually a mesh, very fine mesh, so yes u can however it doesn't line up wonderfully. i recomend adding and adjustable strap inside like from the vader voice changer masks or cheap old baseball helmet toys. but it is clearly visible.

i used a standard krylon primer, then i used a leather spray paint over that cuz it had the color i wanted. sadly that chipped (what u see here) so i ended up going with a regular krylon red after. its not my favorite paint but i used whats available to me.

go to amazon or ebay, buy the disguise iron man full helmet for 30 bucks, it velcros together. prime it and paint it. if ur skilled with bondo you can sculpt it to look proper..sadly i am not.

I have been considering this as a fill in for my red hood costume until I can build my own red hood helmet from scratch, but I think this would be great for halloween. (Although only true comic fans will even know who you are, but that's the point right?)

actually if you know how to use bondo or anything about casting, u could sculpt on this and make a VERY convincing helmet, sadly i just dont know anything about it. so all i could do is paint it, but you def could do something awesome wiht this as ur base.

I'm with you I know nothing about bondo or casting, but it seems like at least a decent base to start from, if nothing else, the repaint serves as a quick fill in to get the job done. I would like to see how it looked with the full costume.

Have you considered filling in a few of the details with bondo or plumbers epoxy? It would make it look less Iron Man like and more Red Hood like.

its crossed my mind a few times...but i dont know how to use it, also worried it may be too heavy for the plastic to hold. if i could make molds or anything like that i could solve the problem, but i dont know how sadly

Plumbers epoxy is quite easy to use. I've utilized it once.
It depends on what brand you buy, but all you do is mix it and apply it into the cracks liberally. Then you sand it smooth with sandpaper into the prefered shape. It's like air-dry clay, but WAY tougher.

hmm, i think the frame of this helmet is too weak and shifty for that, id have to probably apply it then have someone cast the whole friggin thing to make it work, but i dunno maybe i'll try it.

this one is cheap but a solid primer coat and a repaint makes it look pretty solid. its 2 parts, front and back half with overlap seem but its pretty decent. i added a chin strap to help keep form but for 30 bucks or less u cant really complain on any level.

teh white eye covers alone are pretty worth it honestly.

I can't sculpt either - I think the Iron Man helmet is a pretty good base - the overall shape is almost the same, the immediately noticeable differences are the ears and the fact the Red Hood helmet doesn't have the indents of the Iron Man one and the eye shape is a bit different - depending how fussy you're going to be, it's really not a huge difference overall once you redo the paint job and add in the black detailing.:) If you add a costume to it, the context is there and anyone who knows will recognise it. I just need to order a helmet now!

One thing I really love about the film is the fact you get costume shots of every layer from every angle so you can make it as precise as you want, you don't have to guess. :)

What kind of prep work did you do to the helmet to make sure the paint stuck?

i took a shot, i just did 2 primer coats with krylon spray primer, worked great. then i used a sharpie believe it or not to do the black lining, worked out just fine.
